WOW Hall Tops ODE Readers' Choice Awards
Readers of the University of Oregon Daily Emerald just named the WOW Hall Eugene's Number 1 Concert Venue and Number 1 Live Music Venue.
Says the Emerald:
"Throughout the years, WOW Hall has attracted Eugene citizens and University students to meet in the community to listen to great music and study interesting art. The performance hall is more than 100 years old and includes not only a musical performance venue, but also a lobby to showcase artwork."
The WOW Hall was actually constructed in 1932.
Notes Goes Digital
New Post Office regulations require two sticky tabs on every letter-sized piece of mail consisting of newsprint stock. The WOW Hall depends on volunteers to bulk mail the newsletter to our members and supportive businesses. The new tabbing requirement not only adds expense, it more than doubles the total number of volunteer hours needed to complete the mailing project. WOW Hall volunteers give up a bit of finger with every label and tab and we don’t want to ask too much of them.
You can help take the burden off our volunteers, save paper and get your Notes faster by signing up for a new monthly e-mail list to receive a link to the digital WOW Hall Notes. Not only will the current issue be available online, we’ll soon have an archive of past issues available for you to access at will.
Embedded flip-book style, downloadable version and link to previous
issues can be found at:
As a 501c3 nonprofit arts organization, the CCPA depends upon the help of businesses and individuals to host diverse entertainment and educational events for all ages while preserving the historic WOW Hall. If you are interested in becoming a business sponsor, please contact the WOW Hall office at 687-2746. Business sponsors are recognized in the WOW Hall Lobby, on the back page of the WOW Hall Notes and on our website, www.wowhall.org
MEMBERSHIP PARTY SUPPORTERS!
By Bob Fennessy
The Community Center for the Performing Arts (CCPA) wants to thank everyone who supported the annual WOW Hall Membership Party held on Saturday, December 12. Entertainment was provided by David Rogers, Halie Loren and Matt Treder, Queen Accordionna and the Accordion-Okie! All Stars and the band MisGuided Children -- all donated their services and deserve our special gratitude.
The CCPA Board of Directors and many volunteers donated countless hours of their time decorating and setting up, picking up food, serving and cleaning up afterwards. This event would be impossible without their participation.
This year eighty-nine businesses donated food, beverages and gift certificates! Those attending were given the opportunity to sample the best food and drinks Eugene has to offer. The donating businesses were announced from the stage and applauded by the audience.
Of course, this entire event is put on to thank our members, without whom the CCPA could not exist. The CCPA is a nonprofit, tax exempt arts organization (501C-3; federal tax identification number 51-0191790) that enjoys the support of over 700 individuals, families and businesses in maintaining and operating the historic Woodmen of the World Hall as an all-ages performing arts venue. The annual Membership Party is one way we thank those contributors for their support.
is the nonprofit (501c3) arts organization that owns the historic Woodmen of the World (WOW) dance hall at the corner of 8th and Lincoln in Eugene and operates the facility as an all ages performing arts venue. The organization currently enjoys the support of approximately 900 members and 400 volunteers.
CCPA ANNUAL MEETING
The Community Center for the Performing Arts held it’s Annual Membership Meeting on Tuesday, June 2, at the WOW Hall. A total of sixty members attended and approved an annual budget, reaffirmed the organization’s mission statement and elected five new members to the board of directors.
Bookkeeper Carole Goerger presented the Financial Report. The 2008/09 Fiscal Year has been a success, with a net operating income of $3672.70 for the year so far (July through May).
“We are going into a new year with good cash reserves, a budget and budget goals,” reported Goerger. “We have weathered very strong competition from other venues for musical artists. We have held our own and become a bit stronger in a continued terrible economy and have adjusted to and maintained positive relationships with our new neighbors living next door.”
The membership (with one dissenter) approved an operating budget of $471,158.38 for the coming fiscal year. Approved unanimously was the following Policy Statement for 2009:
“For the fiscal year starting July 1, 2009, it will continue to be the general policy of the CCPA/WOW Hall to serve people of all ages, nationalities, races, genders, sexual orientations, abilities and religions of our without discrimination. This includes the staff, CCPA members, volunteers, community members and Board of Directors of our organization. We will embrace our community and involve our membership in as many ways possible. We will continue to operate with financial care on all projects and decisions. All construction and expansions will be done with respect and compliance to the WOW Hall’s historic preservation criteria. Further, it will continue to be the goal to expand financially as we look forward to the long-term viability of our organization.”
Nominations were taken to fill five seats on the Board of Directors. Ten members accepted nominations. Elected to two year terms were Sean Cannon, Paul Perez, Michelle Smith and Michael Zarkesh. Elected to a one year term was Colin Quisenberry.
Continuing board members are: Chico Schwall (acting chair until first official meeting), Mike Tugwell (Treasurer), Mayo Finch and Sherry Franzen.
Special thanks to outgoing board members Liora Sponko, Laura Poueymirou, Keith Herchberger, Lilly Lamadore and David Zupan.
Based upon feedback from the Oregon Arts Commission that the CCPA’s Mission Statement was too broad, the Board of Directors presented two alternate versions to the membership. The membership voted to reaffirm the current multipurpose Mission Statement:
The W.O.W. Hall is owned and operated by the Community Center for the Performing Arts, a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization dedicated to:
Providing cultural arts and educational opportunities for all ages and income levels.
Preserving and operating the historic Woodmen of the World Hall as a multipurpose community arts center.
Maintaining a supportive environment for local artists and their new creative efforts.
CCPA 2009 Board of Directors (left to right): Paul Perez, Sherry Franzen, Michael Zarkesh, Mike Tugwell, Mayo Finch, Michelle Smith, Sean Cannon
The new Board of Directors held their first official meeting on Thursday, June 18, for the purpose of electing officers and making committee appointments.
Elected Chair was Mike Tugwell, Vice Chair Paul Perez, Secretary Michelle Smith and Treasurer Michael Zarkesh.
The next Board of Directors meeting is scheduled for Thursday, July 23, 6:30 pm at the Growers Market building, 525 Willamette St. All Board meetings are open to the public.
New WOW Hall Video
University of Oregon students Josh McHale and Tyler Macklin recently completed a short documentary for the WOW Hall. The goal of the video was to investigate the daily operations of the WOW Hall and the involvement it takes to run a nonprofit organization like the CCPA. The video focuses on the importance and benefits of volunteer participation from the Eugene community and the opportunities the WOW has to offer its dedicated volunteer base.
Macklin and McHale hope that the video will encourage community members to come out and get involved at the WOW Hall and educate them about the importance of the venue to the citizens of Eugene and the surrounding area.
You can check out the video yourself at www.wowhall.org or at

Major Improvement Projects Launched at WOW Hall
By Jon Pincus
Four major improvement projects are being launched at the historic Woodmen of the World Hall this summer. Two of them are designed to eliminate community noise conflicts with our new neighbors in the just opened Westown residential development directly east and adjacent to the Hall.
HVAC & Sound Attenuation
The largest project is the installation of a complete heating, ventilation and air conditioning system to service the Main Hall. The design will have little noticeable visual impact on the historic fabric of the Hall's interior but will have a big impact on the enjoyment of events at the Hall. The Carrier equipment which drives the system will provide fully conditioned air inside. The system was designed by Larry McGuiness of ATP Engineers Inc. The lowest qualified bid for installation was provided by Commercial Air Inc. of Eugene.
With the installation of this system the production staff will no longer have to open the windows and doors during amplified shows to cool the main hall, an important component of our efforts to operate compatibly with our new neighbors. Additionally, after years of hot events it will now be cool during big summertime shows! The same installation will provide fully controlled heating during the winter. Although the new HVAC system will enable the CCPA to heat and cool automatically, all of the WOW Hall's original natural ventilation features are being retained so that energy can be conserved by relying on the natural venting when conditions don't require the use of the large scale mechanical system.
Simultaneously, a major acoustic attenuation project is being launched. The work for this project includes sheathing the interior of the main hall roof structure with sheet rock set over insulation and the addition of insulation above the main hall ceiling. Acoustic testing in preparation for the design of the project revealed that the majority of sound being transferred between the two properties is emanating from the roof. These measures will help block that pathway for sound.
Additional features of the project include acoustic treatment of the main hall window covers and the north and east exit doors. In addition to limiting sound transfer, this project will also increase energy efficiency for heating and cooling inside the Hall. Sound testing for the project was conducted by Jake Ross of Altermatt Sound Engineers and former WOW Hall sound engineer Jordan Gillette. Additional sound testing assistance was provided by Jon Pincus, Michael Tucker of Metropolitan Affordable Housing Corporation, and CCPA sound engineers Calyn Kelly, Cameron Clark and Colin Quisenberry. Design of the acoustic project was provided by Jake Ross of Altermatt Sound Engineers. Altermatt has an extensive resume of acoustic treatment projects for performance spaces including the acoustic renovation of Carnegie Hall in New York. The lowest qualified quote for the insulation component of the acoustic project was provided by the Home Insulation Company, operated by CCPA member Karl Mueller. Their bid included a $1000.00 donation of services to the project.
Design for both the HVAC and the Acoustic Improvement projects was supervised by architect Rob Dortignacq, AIA. Funding is being provided by a $50,000.00 gift from the Metropolitan Affordable Housing Corporation, the developers of Westown and a deferred loan of $25,000.00 from the City of Eugene's Historic Loan Program. We greatly appreciate the assistance of City Councilor Andrea Ortiz, Mayor Kitty Piercy, City Manager Jon Ruiz, City of Eugene Community Development Department Grants Manager Linda Dawson, and City of Eugene Senior Planner for Historic Preservation and Mixed Use Centers Ken Guzowski in helping us arrange for the City's portion of the funding for these projects.
Historic Preservation
In addition to the HVAC and Acoustic Improvement Projects a third major project has been launched at the WOW Hall. The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department State Historic Preservation Office's Heritage Program has provided a $10,000 Preserving Oregon matching grant for a complete restoration of the WOW Hall exterior and a variety of repairs on the building's interior. Improvements planned through this project include restoration of all of the Hall's windows, restoration of exterior finishes, restoration of exterior metal work, reconstruction of the north main hall exit door set, installation of new emergency hardware on the front entry doors, repair of roof drains that are affecting plaster in the main hall and repair of the east wall parapet. All work will be conducted observing the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties.
The project was begun this past winter with the restoration and preparation for painting of the main hall windows. That work was performed with excellence by master craftsman Pete Lavelle, also known as the host of KLCC's “Back Porch” radio program. When this project is complete it will give the Hall a historically accurate facelift that will strengthen the community's connection with the Hall as a historic landmark, make the Hall more attractive to all segments of the community and help prevent future maintenance problems.
Design for all three institutionally funded projects is being supervised by Robert Dortignacq, AIA. Rob is well known in Oregon for his work on such prominent landmarks as the Pioneer Courthouse, the Union Train Station and the Old Church in Portland. His projects here in Eugene have included the rehabilitation of the Southern Pacific Train Station and the rehabilitation of the Axbilly Department Store (The DAC). All three projects are being coordinated by Jon Pincus, M-Arch and Larry Wikander, with Jon acting as the daily business contact for the work. The senior advisor on the projects is University of Oregon Professor Emeritus Don Peting. Don was the head of the U. of O. School of Architecture's Structures Program and the University's Historic Preservation Program for many years. Historic Preservation consultant Liz Carter, a former staff member of the State Historic Preservation office, is also providing consultation for the projects.
These projects could not have been mounted without the work of the CCPA Facilities Committee. In addition to those mentioned above, regular Facilities Committee members last year included Facilities Chair David Helton, whose work was instrumental in gaining funding for the projects, and David Gusset, known for building beautiful violins and owner of the historic A.V. Peters house on Lincoln Street, who brought his extensive experience in historic building restoration to the table. In addition to these major projects many smaller repair and improvement projects have occurred during the year including numerous repairs accomplished by Larry Wikander and construction of a new marquis by Cameron Clark.
Basement
In addition to the three projects noted above the plans are currently in progress for renovation of the basement meeting room. Concession Managers Angela Lees and Jessica Syverson are coordinating the project in consultation with the Facilities Committee. Plans include new finishes all around, improvements in the service area and new furnishings. Funding for the project has been provided by the band Floater who donated $3000.00 for that purpose.
The election of a new board has brought a new burst of energy to the Facilities Committee. New committee members include Facilities Committee Chair Keith Hershberger, CCPA Treasurer Mike Tugwell and new Board member David Zupan. They have joined with the ongoing committee members in pushing the current projects forward and planning new projects.
We are already looking forward to the next round of improvements to the Hall. Tentative projects include complimenting the exterior restoration of the building with a complete restoration of the Hall's interior, installation of HVAC systems for the portions of the building not covered by the current project, restoring the historic streetscape around the Hall including the original street lamps which once lit the Eighth Avenue and Lincoln Street sides of the building and building the long sought L-shaped backstage addition on the north and east sides of the building. That addition would provide a new green room, shop space, loading dock facilities, storage and circulation around the performance areas for production staff and performers. Many of the potential funding sources for these improvements require matching funds. Now is a great time to donate to projects that will enable the Hall to serve the community for decades to come.
If you would like to help make our dreams of a fully restored, equipped and expanded WOW Hall a reality, please join us at our Facilities Committee meetings. They are held monthly and are posted on the Board's board in the Hall's front foyer and on the WOW Hall list of events on the CCPA web page at www.wowhall.org. All meetings are open to the public. Come dream, plan and work with us!
The WOW Hall is now on YouTube, and we want you to join us!
